Trip to Japanese Gardens and National Stud

1–2 minutes

On Thursday, 11th June, 39 members of our branch set off by bus on our summer outing to the Japanese Gardens and National Stud. The dull and overcast day didn’t dampen the enthusiasm of the group. The buzz on the bus was akin to that of a very busy staffroom.

It was a short journey but we were ready for the delicious scones with tea/coffee on arrival. This was a very relaxing break before we set off on our guided tour of the Irish National Stud. Our guide, Sue, was very knowledgeable and skilfully guided us through the intricacies of coverings, stud fees, the world of stallions, mares and foals. Over 250 foals are born in the stud every year. We were also introduced to some of the living legends of the racehorse world as they relaxed in the fields along the avenue.

We also enjoyed the Irish Racehorse Experience, an immersive experience where we got the opportunity to purchase, name and train our very own racehorse.

Other highlights of the visit were St. Fiachra’s Garden, a spiritual place of beauty, peace and tranquility.

The Japanese Gardens, created between 1906 and 1910 represents the story of life told through rocks, trees, water and pathways.

It was then back on the bus on our way to Carlow where we enjoyed a delicious 3 course meal with wine in the Carlow Dolmen Hotel. Many thanks to the management and staff for their hospitality and service.

It was a great day out and our thanks to Rose and Sheila for organising a wonderful outing for us.
