Trip to Valencia

1–2 minutes

A group of 31 from our branch headed to the city of Valencia from 13th to 17th April. We stayed in the Hotel Parque Central which was very convenient to the main shopping and tourist areas. It was an excellent choice and the staff were welcoming, friendly and helpful.

On day 1 many of the group went on a free walking tour of the city while others availed of the hop on/hop off bus. Both great ways to learn the history of the city and getting our bearings.

After that people split into smaller groups and enjoyed the sights of the old city, a visit to the City of Arts and Sciences, a trip to the beach, cycling along the Turia Gardens. Some even went to sea on a catamaran cruise. The food and drink were varied and delicious. In all, it was a great trip, with great company and lovely memories. Thanks to Rose for making things run so smoothly.

For me the main highlight of my stay in Valencia was the Church of San Nicolás de Bari and San Pedro Mártir in the old town. Difficult enough to find the building and the entrance. The narrow access through an alleyway from Calle Caballeros does not hint at the grandeur awaiting you inside. It was originally established around 1242. In the late 17th century, the interior was transformed with elaborate Baroque decoration and frescoes depicting scenes from the lives of Saint Nicholas and Saint Peter Martyr. Because of its richly painted ceiling, the church is often called the “Valencian Sistine Chapel.” The Light of Saint Nicholas” (La Luz de San Nicolás) a 45-minute audiovisual light show is just spectacular. I’ve posted a small clip from the light show.
