What an enjoyable guided walk we had today from Danesfort to the Mill Restaurant in Kells. Our guide, fellow member Joe Hickey, was very knowledgeable on the history and stories of Danesfort Parish and Ladyswell. He introduced us to the main families who were the “movers and shakers” of that area over the generations. We learned of rival churches and rival schools and the rich history of the parish. We walked along country lanes where family farms, ruined churches and abandoned schools were our landmarks. The laneways were quiet except for farmers busy about their business. Occasionally we had to give way to tractors. Our route from Danesfort to Kells was 6km so we were delighted to reach the Mill Restaurant in Kells where we met up with more of our members who didn’t undertake the long walk. Here we were treated to fresh scones, tea/coffee. The staff were very welcoming, courteous and friendly. We will certainly visit them again. After a leisurely break, nice scones, interesting chat and conversations we began the trek back to our starting point another 6km away. The terrain was mostly on the level with one or two inclines. The hours passed quickly and when we reached our cars I couldn’t believe it was close to 2pm. As the saying goes “Gioraíonn Beirt Bóthar”. Thanks Joe and all the group for a very enjoyable day.
