The tradition of placing a lighted candle in the window has long been a popular Christmas tradition in Ireland. It was said to welcome the Holy Family on their way to Bethlehem. This year may it also be a source of warmth, hope, and vision in this time of sadness and darkness for many people. The lighted candle in the window also represents our welcome for the stranger. Again, this year, let it be a sign of our solidarity with all those, especially family members, who cannot travel to be with us for Christmas.

Anne Frank said, “Look how a single candle can both defy and define the darkness.”

As you light your Advent candle we pray that its light will defy and dispel the darkness in our lives. We wish you and your family a very Happy Christmas agus go raibh Sonas na Féile oraibh go léir.

Prayer Over The Advent Candle

O God, as light comes from this candle,
May the blessing of Jesus Christ come to us,
Warming our hearts and brightening our way.
May Christ our Savior
Bring life into the darkness of this world,
And to us, as we wait for his coming.
Amen.
